Modern Resolutions for Modern Times

imageWith the New Year coming it’s natural to think about change. Opening the calendar is like getting a new notebook. It’s a clean canvas to write a better story.

I’ve been thinking a lot about resolutions. Although I have my list of personal resolutions (and stay tuned because personally this will be a HUGE year of change for my family and I). I’ve been thinking about general resolutions we all can make to be better not just as individuals but as a society. Below is a list of suggested ways to make 2014 our best year yet:

Enough Stuff– We’ve become such a wasteful society. We are constantly upgrading our devices, updating our wardrobes, redecorating our homes. You know what we end up with? More stuff, more trash, more stress. Why not slow down on consumerism this year? Your iPhone still works? Don’t rush out to buy the next generation. That old dress can be updated with a belt? Cinch it. Less purchasing means less clutter, which yields less anxiety, and the best part, more money in the bank. Plus it’s better for the environment!

Spend on Experiences– All that consumer money you save can be used towards experiences. For all the crap that you can’t take with you when you depart this life, your memories you can through those that remember all the fun you had. Take that dream vacation, see that play, have that day at the spa. Life is meant to be lived. Spend your “living” living it up!

Share Less– Less information that is. Social media has made our lives open books, and though it may seem I report everything that goes on in my life, the reality is that I don’t. There are many things I keep to myself. We all need a personal life. Make sure you are allowing yourself that luxury.

Share More– So much good can happen when we share what we have with friends and family. From consuming less calories to creating less waste to saving money, so much good comes when we share. Your kids have outgrown their clothes again? Pack them up for your friend whose child is younger. Out to dinner? Share a meal, the portions at most American restaurants are more than you need anyway. Somebody loves something you own more than you do? Give it to them.

Pamper Yourself– Allow yourself luxuries. It’s ok to be selfish. Giving yourself the time and activities you need to be happy make you better for others. Get a babysitter so you can get a manicure, allow yourself that latte even if it costs $4. What good is a life of self denial and always putting yourself last?

Let Go of the Phone– …and the tablet…and the laptop. Enjoy the company of those around you. You can Instagram, tweet, and Facebook at the end of the day. Not only will you be able to truly enjoy what you are doing, but you will have fun reliving it later on when you post your pictures and status updates.

Let Go in General– Don’t hold on to negative energy. Confront feelings of anger, jealousy, and regret head on. Accept when things don’t go your way and focus on how to turn it around.

Let it Shine– You know that little light of yours? Let it shine bright. Love yourself as you are and allow others to as well. With social media people are now able to broadcast their talents, knowledge, and senses of humor. Don’t be afraid to be a star in your own right.

May this be your best year yet!
Happy New Year from!

RHOBH Episode 8: She Hearts You, She Hearts You Not

The episode opens with Yolanda arriving at the florist to select flowers for her dinner party.  She’s scheduled the Canadian Tenors to perform for all the ladies. Oh those poor Canadians, they have no idea what they’re in for.  Yolanda explains she wants to go out of her way to make her dinner party special because Palm Springs was such a disaster.

Joyce and her “baby” Michael arrive at a sushi restaurant and discuss what happened on the fateful trip to the desert.  She tells him about Brandi’s distasteful remarks. Her baby is clearly unhappy. They put the subject to bed and continue to have a lovely dinner.

Over at Brandi’s, Kyle, Mauricio, Portia and Kim arrive to help search for Chica.  Kyle is really overdressed for the occasion, but hey she’s there helping so you can’t really fault her. This scene is sad though, knowing that Chica was never found.

At Carlton‘s castle, she and nanny Elizy decorate the playroom. This is not the playroom most of us have in our houses, I’m talking about Carlton and David‘s playroom. Think, red room of pain.  She is designing a “staging area”  where she can apparently put on a burlesque show for her husband.  She and Elizy, who she says is also her best friend,(umm, okay) are actually taking an inventory of all her lingerie and toys, which include a ball gag and mask in one. Whatever floats your boat sister. Fifty Shades of out there? Maybe, but she makes no bones about it and I can respect that.

Meanwhile at the construction site that will soon become Lisa‘s “gay garden”, Pump, things are progressing. Lisa is quite the perfectionist and wants everything to be just so.  No doubt it will be.  She and Ken even look cute in hard hats.  Pink of course.

Over at Kim’s, we see that Kingsley has really improved his behavior since the trainer was last there.  Kim sees a big change but the trainer tells her that both Kingsley and Kim need to work on the co-dependency issue. He takes Kingsley to live with him and a pack of dogs for a week so that he can be socialized properly.   Kim is sad but lets him go.

In Malibu at Yolanda’s they prepare for the party and she is really involved in the process. She explains that throwing a party is more than just calling a caterer and having them do it for you.  She enjoys setting the table and doing the decorating. I agree because I feel exactly the same way. David rehearses with the tenors as Yolanda, her caterer/friend Thomas go over the place cards. They have a good laugh over the seating arrangements.  Yolanda is like the puppet master for the evening.

Kyle arrives to pick up Brandi, Mauricio meeting her at the Foster’s, and they head to Yolanda’s. Yolanda receives a call from Carlton saying she’s ill and can’t make it.  She tells David who balks a little and says, “Didn’t she know she was sick before 6:30?”.  He makes a good point. Kyle and Brandi open some wine in the limo and Brandi tells Kyle that Lisa and Yolanda are always lecturing her about her drinking. Kyle tells us that Brandi is a different person when Lisa isn’t around.  She wonders if Brandi wants Lisa to think she doesn’t like Kyle.

Everyone arrives at Yolanda’s and Gigi ends up filling Carlton’s seat at the table. Brandi tells Gigi that Joyce can’t stop staring at her because everything needs to be about her. Now that there’s someone younger and prettier there, it isn’t and Brandi likes that it irritates Joyce.  I totally disagree here.  I don’t think Joyce cares, and if she’s staring at Gigi it’s because, how can you not stare?

Dinner is served and everyone sits. Kyle questions why she, Joyce and Kim don’t have hearts on their place cards and Lisa and Brandi do.  Yolanda claims she did it subconsciously. Yeah right. Kyle says, that her subconscious was speaking loud and clear. What a great start to another dinner party.  Honestly, do you expect any less from our lovely ladies?  Brandi, who has already downed half a bottle of wine on the way there is clearly wrecked.  Lisa warns Brandi to behave and Ken tells her to drink some water.  This of course just adds fuel to the fire. David and Yolanda make toasts, she thanking David for standing by her during her Lyme disease.  Joyce makes a toast in Spanish and Brandi says she’d rather hear English.  Joyce refers to Michael as her baby and Brandi asks him if he is indeed a baby. Needless to say, he really doesn’t like this.

David brings out the tenors and they sing a beautiful song he composed. This is the only time there’s no pettiness going on.  The evening ends and Joyce and the baby recall Brandi’s nasty comments. Joyce realizes  she’s Brandi’s number one target but seems unfazed. The episode ends.

Next week:Yolanda gives David a book entitled “For Your Eyes Only”. Carlton tries on bikinis for David and his mom? Kyle, Brandi and Joyce try on dresses, Kim rides in a race car, and we have a Pump Rules crossover complete with another Brandi/Joyce beatdown.  Stay tuned…

Reality Roundup: The Best of 2013

Porsha and Kordell Stewart (Source: Paras Griffin/Landov)

From legal turmoil to marital bliss, it’s been another crazy year for Bravo’s Real Housewives. That Housewife Guy runs down 5 of the juiciest headlines of 2013.

 5. Porsha Stewart BLINDSIDED by Husband’s Divorce Filing

Although it was not necessarily a shock to viewers of The Real Housewives of AtlantaPorsha Stewart claimed she was completely blindsided when her ex-husband Kordell Stewart filed for divorce back in March.

After less than two years of marriage, Kordell called it quits and filed divorce papers in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia on March 22nd, saying that his marriage to Porsha was “irretrievably broken.”

The Atlanta housewife can finally move forward with the next chapter of her life as her divorce from Kordell was finalized earlier this month.

On this Sunday’s episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Porsha has a dramatic breakdown over her divorce.

“As much as I want to get over Kordell, being around these different women talking about children and babies, it just made me think about the family that I wanted and the family that we shared,” Porsha says.

In the preview, Atlanta co-star NeNe Leakes tried to comfort Porsha. “I’ve tried to be there to support Porsha, but our relationship is very one-sided. It’s very frustrating,” NeNe reveals.

Watch NeNe dish out some advice in the video preview here.

4. NeNe Leakes Re-Marries Ex-Husband Gregg Leakes

Second time’s the charm for NeNe and Gregg Leakes. The couple officially became man and wife again in 2013. Before divorcing in 2011, the two were married for 13 years. The pair reconciled in 2012 and NeNe announced their second engagement via Twitter last New Year’s Eve.

Nene and Gregg said their “I Dos” for the second time in front of 400+ guests and Bravo cameras in Atlanta, Georgia this past summer at the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel. The duo spared no expense for their “Old Hollywood” themed wedding—the lavish event boasted a whopping $1.8 million price tag.

NeNe’s reconciliation with Gregg and her journey to the altar were documented on her own spinoff series, I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding.

NeNe was the third Atlanta housewife to earn an official spin-off series this past year. Kim Zolciak’s wedding/married life spinoff, Don’t Be Tardy and Kandi Burruss music competition series, The Kandi Factory debuted on Bravo earlier in 2013.

After getting divorced in 2011, NeNe says that this time she and Gregg will last. “Both of us want this, so it will definitely work this time,” NeNe told Life & Style“I know exactly what I’m getting myself into.”

3. The Real Housewives of New Jersey Manzo Swap

Whether you love her or hate her, Caroline Manzo will not be returning to The Real Housewives of New Jersey next season. From the “Ham Game” to her biting wit, the RHONJ star has made her mark over the past 5 seasons.

Despite the fun-times Caroline has had on the show, she says it was time to move on. “Over the past few years my outlook on the show has changed from something I couldn’t wait to show my future grandchildren to something I hope my future grandchildren never see,” Manzo wrote on her Bravo blog.

“I’ve always prided myself on being a good example for my children and my decision to leave is based on advice I’ve always given them: ‘Be true to yourself and be proud of who you are, you are born with a name and you die with a name, don’t dirty it up.’ Going back to film another season of Housewives would only make me a hypocrite. For me, peace and integrity cannot be bought with money or fame.”

Fans of the family matriarch will not have to say their goodbyes just yet. Caroline and her family are wrapping production on their pilot spin-off series for BravoManzo’d With Children.

Alert the welcome wagon—former Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dina Manzo is back for another run! Marked by the departure of her sister Caroline Manzo, original cast member Dina Manzo will be returning to the series next season.

“Well I guess the (hairless) cats out of the bag,” Dina tweeted back in October of this year. “Yes I’m back. Unlike the past this time it felt ‘right’ … See you on Bravo my friends.”

Dina left the show during season two after a feud with her then co-star Danielle Staub. She then went on to host an event planning reality show on HGTV titled Dina’s Party.

After three years of feuding, the Manzo sisters have reconciled. In an exclusive interview with In Touch, Dina reveals she and Caroline are “totally fine,” adding that anger has been replaced by civility.

“When we see each other, we kiss each other hello,” Dina told the mag this week. “We just don’t hang out for Sunday dinner, that’s all…If Caroline needed me and called me tomorrow, I would be there. I love my sister. I will always love her.”

However a source, who wishes to remain anonymous, has told us that a reconciliation between the two has NOT happened. Reading between the lines of Dina’s statement I’d say our source is on the money!

2. Bethenny and Jason Call it Quits

It may sound like old news, but it has only been one year since the former Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel called it quits on her marriage to Jason Hoppy. After months of speculation about the state of their marriage, Bethenny announced that she and Jason were separating.

“It brings me great sadness to say that Jason and I are separating,” Frankel said in a statement. “This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family.”

The couple announced their split back in December 2012 and filings were made in January of 2013. The two have been dealing with ongoing highly publicized divorce settlement issues, including custody disputes over their 3-year-old daughter Brynn, ever since.

The Skinnygirl mogul met her soon-to-be ex-husband in late 2008 and they tied the knot less than less two years later. The duo wed on March 28th, 2010 in front of Bravo cameras at New York’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel. Their nuptials were featured on Bethenny’s first Real Housewives spinoff show, Bethenny Getting Married.

Since the split, Bethenny has been busy filming her self-titled day-time talk show, Bethenny.

1. Not So Fabulicious—Teresa and Joe’s Legal Turmoil

It is no secret that the stars of Bravo‘s Real Housewives franchise have their fair share of financial woes. This time around, The Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Teresa and Joe Giudice have caught themselves in financial peril, again.

Teresa and Joe were indicted this past summer on 39-counts of federal fraud and tax charges that, according to legal experts, may cause them both to serve time in federal prison. The indictment details charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications, and bankruptcy fraud, against the couple from Towaco, N.J.

The 33-page indictment document accuses Joe Giudice of failing to file tax returns for 2004 through 2008 and states that Joe and Teresa falsely informed lenders on loan application that they were employed and/or receiving substantial salaries when in fact, they were not.

The couple pled not guilty to the charges; however, if convicted Teresa and Joe could each face decades behind bars. Joe even faces being deported to Italy if he is found guilty of just one of the 39 counts in the indictment, prosecutors said — as it emerged recently that he is not a US citizen.

Added to that, Juicy Joe is currently awaiting trial for allegedly impersonating his brother, Pete Giudice, to illegally obtain a driver’s license after his own was suspended for a DWI. He can face up to 10 years in prison for those charges. Joe’s rap sheet continued to expand this year after being pulled over twice in one month.

In November, Joe was cited by police for careless driving in a school zone. He was also ticketed for driving without an inspection sticker on his vehicle and not having a valid insurance card.

The couple opened up about their legal woes on a special episode of Watch What Happens Live back in September. Host Andy Cohen sat down with the reality television stars to discuss their indictment and how they are managing to keep their lives together.

During the sit down, an emotional Teresa said she is trying to stay strong for their children. “I can’t fall apart, Andy. I have my daughters, they mean the world to me … maybe something that my daughters can learn from this is that my mom was really strong through all of this and was there for us and I hope they always have that with them,” Teresa said wiping away tears.

Catch a clip below:

The couple’s federal fraud trial, originally scheduled for February, will now take place in April of 2014.
