After three seasons on The Real Housewives of Orange County, one would think Heather Dubrow would have risen to the top of the pecking order, especially with two newbie cast members. In Housewives land, however, nobody’s role is ever guaranteed. The once revered voice of reason is now finding her season in the hot seat. I caught up with Heather just days before she was departing for a much needed family vacation. She took a break from packing  to give me a little Season 9 behind the scenes.

TBB: Was there any hesitation about returning for a third season on RHOC?

HD: Definitely! This show is difficult to do. It’s really hard to be held accountable for everything that comes out of your mouth. We film so much and in the end (the viewers) see pieces of things, and the way they are put together is not really reality, and it’s frustrating.

TBB: The dynamics of the group have changed this season. What’s your take on the new girls (Shannon Beador and Lizzie Rovsek) and your role in the show now?

HD: I think they are both really good additions to the cast. As for my role on this season…every week when I get my screener I’m sort of scared to see what’s on there. We filmed twice as long as the previous season and I had a lot going on so it was a very stressful season from me. I felt very isolated from the other girls. I really wasn’t seeing them except for at major events.

TBB: We have been watching your once tight friendship with Tamra (Judge) unravel. In the final cut it looks like you sabotaged her ride on a mechanical bull causing her to fall. What went through your mind while watching that incident?

HD: The truth is it just didn’t happen all that fast. I made a joke in saying, “Turn it up”. I said it when I got on the bull, I said it again when Tamra got on. It didn’t mean “turn it up and maim or hurt my friend”. If my comment or joke is in any way responsible for (her falling) I apologize profusely. I feel terrible. I would never do that to my friend. There were cameras everywhere and we’d been drinking. I’ll be apologizing for this for a long time. I love Tamra and would never want to hurt her.

TBB: How do you feel about the other women accusing you of acting out your friendship with them?

HD: When Shannon and I had lunch I walked away thinking we were okay and it was going to be a fresh start. When I saw what she said I felt like I was being talked about behind my back. I was very disappointed in what she said to Tamra at her Christmas party. If I had known that I probably wouldn’t have gone to the party.

TBB: Did you fake that phone call at Shannon’s Christmas party?

HD: No, and so many people have tweeted pictures of me holding the phone, picking up the phone and the lights are clearly on. Anyone who watches this show would know that my husband, who would say if I kicked him under the table, “Why are you kicking me,” would say “There’s nobody there” if I handed him a phone with nobody on the other end. Furthermore, I would never fake anything having to do with my kids’ health. That’s such bad Karma.

TBB: Do you feel that the absence of Gretchen (Rossi) and Alexis (Bellino) who were both long standing cast members has affected RHOC?

HD: Each season feels like such a restart. It seems to me like Gretchen and Alexis are in better places doing what they want to do, and they are happy. Thankfully it didn’t affect the show. I think OC is a really strong franchise and the whole is greater than its parts.

TBB: You have had a few guest roles on some scripted series since becoming a Housewife. Are you looking to make a complete transition from reality back to scripted television?

HD: I’m enjoying the opportunities that are coming to me. I just finished a 12 episode series as part of Sony’s Vision Network and am actively pursuing auditions and reading for roles. I’m in a position where I can pick when I want to work, not that they always want me, but I don’t want to give up too much time with my children. Right now I’m very happy and feel very balanced doing both, I don’t think one has to be exclusive of the other.

TBB: Your husband Terry has been very supportive of you. Watching the RHOC how do you feel about his involvement in the drama?

HD: I think, especially this season, I felt very isolated from the other ladies. They were getting together a lot without me and anything that was going on with me was discussed at these parties. (Terry) was my only advocate. Terry and I are a partnership. We aren’t always perfect but we are a really good team. At the end of the day I go home with him, not one of the other Housewives.

TBB: Terry has his own show, Botched, coming to E. What has it been like for your family doing reality television double duty?

HD: It was very stressful. Terry was not around. He was filming Botched and I was filming Housewives. We were both stretched really thin, but he was so happy with what he was doing. It was such a fun extracurricular add on to his plastic surgery business, and when you are happy and successful you let a lot of things just roll. I think it was more stressful for me because I didn’t have him around that much.

TBB: I was surprised to learn that Terry’s brother was Kevin Dubrow, the late lead singer of Quiet Riot. Does Terry sing at all?

HD: No…that would be no. He has many special gifts, but that is not one of them.

TBB: If Housewives is renewed would you be interested in returning for the next season?

HD: I think so much happened this season and it was such a long season. I need a break. I’m definitely ready for a break. It will depend on what’s going on in my life and also what happens during the reunion. I have to take one day at a time.

TBB: What’s the story on the new house? Is it finished yet?

HD: We have about another year to go.

TBB: Have you got a favorite interior design tip to share with us?

HD: I love mirrors! They can make a small room look bigger and you can find many great inexpensive ones. It’s such a great tool to use in your house.

TBB: Thank you for chatting with me once again. Is there anything you’d like to add?

HD: It’s been a tough season (of RHOC) but I’m really grateful that I’ve had an opportunity to be on the show. I’m really grateful as it’s been wonderful for our whole family. It’s truly been one of those really great life experiences, so thanks Bravo!

Fernanda Rocha Is Working It All Out

imageLast season Fernanda Rocha brought her Brazilian sass and a bit of sexual tension to the Real Housewives of Orange County. Newly in love and relocated, these days Fernanda is focused on taking the fitness industry by storm. With another series of DVDs on the horizon, and a new Brazilian workout called Jiinga, it’s clear that her time on RHOC, though over, was a great investment, though it was a bit of an emotional ride. So what exactly does she think about her time on Bravo TV? We caught up with her to tie up all those lose ends.

TBB: You were on RHOC Season 7 as a friend of Tamra (Barney)’s. How did your friendship develop to a part on the show?

FR: Tamra came to my class with all the Housewives. We started to hang out here and there and that’s how it started.

TBB: You went on a partial cast trip to Texas where Alexis (Bellino) made comments against same sex marriage that she later apologized for. Did you speak to her off camera about her views?

FR: Alexis tried to reach me several times and I chose not to speak to her until the reunion when she could finally apologize on camera to me and to the entire gay community, which she did.

TBB: There was a bit of playful flirting between you and Tamra on the show. Were you attracted to her?

FR: (Laughs) Tamra and I, we shared a kiss. I would not have done that if I didn’t feel an attraction and mutual chemistry.

TBB: Are you still friends with Tamra?

FR: No

TBB: How do you feel about her decision to open CUT Fitness?

FR: I had no idea she had a passion for fitness. I honestly have no feeling about it.

TBB: There are a few Housewives across the franchises who are breaking into the fitness biz with exercise DVDs. What do you think of the “Donkey Booty” and “Stallion Booty” ventures?

FR: I think it’s a joke. I take my fitness career very seriously. I have a degree in kinesiology and I’ve been teaching for 16 years. I care about my clients. Sometimes celebrities just want to put their name on a product for the sake of making money. It blows my mind. I would challenge any of the other Housewives with their DVDs. We can put our clients into a test and check which clients will get results doing our workouts!!! It will be interesting to see their transformation… or not!! ( laughs ).

TBB: You have your own series of fitness DVDs. What types of exercise do they feature and where can we purchase them?

FR: I have the Brazillian Booty workout on my website FernandaFitness.com. The Jiinga workout is my new exercise program. It’s a full body workout with Brazilian dance moves. It’s a lot of fun and great for arms, abs, legs, and booty!

TBB: Did your appearance on RHOC affect your business?

FR: I have had my fitness company since 2003 and being on the show of course, brought more exposure to my life as a whole I’ve been selling more of my workout DVDs and my fitness line (since the show). I’m getting ready to put another line of DVDs out.

TBB: We know how you feel about random Reality TV stars selling themselves as fitness experts. What are your thoughts on Reality fitness shows like The Biggest Loser?

FR: I love it! I thinks it’s very exciting and real. It’s wonderful for people to have the chance to work with professionals, lose weight, and really change their lives. I would love to share my Brazilian fitness methodology in a Reality Show like that. Well… we will work hard and play hard!!

TBB: Any plans to return to Reality TV yourself?

FR: There are a few possibilities. I’d really like to show the reality of my life right now.

TBB: You tweeted to Lisa Vanderpump that you recently moved to LA. Why the move?

FR: Well, I’m in love and my girlfriend lives in LA. I felt that I had to start a new relationship in a new place and with a new beginning.

TBB: There’s a lot of celebrities in LA. Can you share with us who your current clients are?

FR: I’m not back into training yet because I’m focused on my DVDs and I’m exploring working in Brazil for a while. Eventually I might go back to training. I love doing one on one work with clients and seeing results!

TBB: What’s your favorite fitness tip for women (and men) on the go?

FR: I believe you have to find at least 30 minutes a day to do some activities that will move your body.

TBB: What’s your favorite nutritional advice?

FR: I don’t have a degree in nutrition but I know a lot about it. I’m a big a fan of the gluten free diet because you really need to pay attention to the ingredients in the foods you eat. When you stay away from gluten and wheat and eat clean it works very quickly. It works for me when I have a shoot coming up and I need to be in top shape.

TBB: What do you want people to know about you that they didn’t learn from your time on Housewives?

FR: I was in an emotional phase of my life when I did the show. It was difficult for me to really connect with the women. I felt discriminated against and I didn’t have the strength to reach out to others. What people didn’t know about me they will soon learn.

When It Comes to Housewife Hair, Julius Michael is at the Head of the Class

imageNestled in a classy New York City suburb, the Julius Michael Salon in Scarsdale sees enough upscale clientele. When he leaves his shop, however, salon owner Julius Michael is jet-setting to (and with) some of the most sought after women in America. Adored for his fantastic custom locks, and locked lips, he is responsible for the looks of many of Bravo’s Real Housewives, especially in NJ and OC. I first met Michael at an event with Tamra Barney in February, and, naturally, I needed to know more…

TBB: Hello Julius. Give us a little history on how your services became so popular with the Housewives.

JM: (Laughs) I feel the need to laugh. I became so popular so fast because I really bring out (the Housewives’) beauty. I do their hair to transform them without making it look like they are trying too hard.

TBB: I know Kathy Wakile, Melissa Gorga, and Tamra Barney are your clients. Who else do you work with?

JM: I also work with Heather Dubrow , Gretchen Rossi and the newest Housewife Lydia McLaughlin.

TBB: There are so many hairstylists, but these women are using you from across the country even. What is it that makes your services so sought after?

JM: I think it’s because I don’t gossip and they know that. They trust that whatever is said stays between me and whoever is in the room. I’m very professional and there to work. I don’t get involved in what happens on their shows. They also all love my hair extensions and wear them. I really do make the best hair extensions.

TBB: You recently posted a little Housewives promo video you made. Are you also a fan of the shows? Do you have a favorite?

JM: I don’t have a favorite. I made that video because I was sitting in on one of Kathy’s interviews and was playing with my phone. I take a lot of videos and pics during these things so my clients can see what they look like. My phone is loaded with thousands and thousands of videos.

TBB: Will we see you on Real Housewives of Orange County or Real Housewives of New Jersey (which premieres June 2nd) anytime soon?

JM: I probably will be on Jersey and I think you’ll see me on something in Orange County. You won’t see me as a hairdresser but at some of the events or parties. For example Vito (Scalia) and Lauren (Manzo) had an end of the world party which was a lot of fun and I was also at Richie and Victoria (Wakile’s) birthday party and Kathy’s cannoli launch.

***We are giving away Caroline’s autographed book***

TBB: You recently were in the clubhouse with Tamra on Watch What Happens Live. What’s it like in Bravo Andy’s Clubhouse?

JM: Being in The Clubhouse is awesome. Andy can run hot and cold. Sometimes he’ll talk to the guests and hang out and that night he was in such a great mood. He was with us for 40 minutes before the show and an hour after. I got to hold Tamra’s breast implants in my hand, Andy has them in a box. Tamra gave me a shout out in the middle of the interview which I never thought she was going to do, I had expected her to plug her gym. (laughs)

TBB: I know I speak for many women when I say we confide a lot in our hairdressers. Do you hear a lot of behind the scenes secrets while you’re working on your clients?

JM: Yes, of course I do.

TBB: You specialize in extensions and we know many of the Housewives wear them. Is there anyone you know for sure (besides the obvious, ummm Lea Black) who is sporting their own locks?

JM: Lydia has all her own (hair). Lea actually does wear extensions. I know that first hand. She wears them short. Heather Dubrow wears her own hair but I am going to have her wear (extensions) on May 20th on WWHL.

TBB: With the summer coming many of us who can’t have our hairdresser follow us around, or afford extensions, have many bad hair days on the horizon. What products do you recommend to combat the heat and humidity?

JM:My fave product is by Oribe. It’s called Imperial Humidity, it’s the best spray to beat frizz.

TBB: Any products the average woman who wants to lengthen without committing to “permanent” extensions can try?

JM: My extensions are all clips ins. They can definitely get the Housewife looks without the commitment!

TBB: Thank you for talking with me today. Where can our readers go to see you if they want to try the Julius Michael treatment themselves?

JM: My salon Julius Michael Scarsdale in Scarsdale NY.
