Kathy Wakile Shows Her Sweet Side

imageAs many of you know I love to cook, especially bake. It’s a skill I learned very young and I’m always looking to expand my culinary knowledge. So when Kathy Wakile announced she would be publishing some of her recipes for the magnificent bite sized treats she’s always showcasing on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, I made a note on my mental wish list. I mean, I have had this woman’s cannolis at more than one event and they literally are to die for!

The book, Indulge (St. Martin’s Press) recently released and the Wakiles, yes Richie is by his wife’s side every step of the way, are on a book tour. On September 11th they held a book signing event at Books and Greetings in Northvale, NJ. Kathy answered questions from fans and foodies, along with one nervous newlywed who claims she can’t cook beyond Easy Mac. Kathy assured her that there are recipes for cooks at every level in Indulge (which she wrote with Miriam Harris).

Broken into reimagecipes by season, so that we can use the freshest and most abundant ingredients, Indulge is a treat in itself with vibrant photos of food and family. In the audience was Kathy’s own niece, who had driven over an hour to surprise her aunt who she fondly remembers with the 80’s big hair and a “lip phone”. As Kathy said to me, cooking for others is the fastest way to “make people happy.”  I believe the beautifully bound Indulge will help bakers of all abilities make many people happy…but don’t go looking for the cannoli recipe…as sweet as Kathy is, she’s still smart about her business. Read on to find out what else she told me…

TBB: How many recipes are in the book?

KW: There are over 75 recipes in the book. I didn’t count them, but I know there’s over 75.

TBB: Which one is your absolute favorite and why?

KW: You know, that’s like asking me which on of my kids is my favorite (laughs). I’m only kidding! I think the lemon tiramisu or the lemon cheescake are really my favorites taste wise, just because I love lemon, but there’s a really sentimentel one, and it’s called Figs In a Basket. It has a lot of sentimental significance to me.

TBB: Because…

KW: …because the day after Rich and I got engaged my mother and father invited his family over for dinner. At that point our families didn’t know eachother really well and my parents spoke with an accent and his parents spoke with a different accent. After the dinner was over we all went out to the deck and my father presented my in-laws this big basket of figs and their eyes just lit up like “these people are just like us.” There was this mediterranean commonality. It meant so much. It was the best harvest we’ve ever had with the figs. After that (my father) planted (figs) in their yard too. It was just a really nice day.

TBB: How long did the process of writing Indulge take?

KW: Over a year, a long long year. It took a lot of time.

TBB: You have such a passion for baking, any cooking shows in the works?

KW:  You never know, you never know! I am working on some things right now so we’ll see what happens!

TBB: What recipe should beginning bakers try first?

KW: I think the apple crumble is just the perfect thing for a beginner to do and if you don’t like apples and you want to substitute it with peach that will work too.

TBB: Have you been watching the new season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey?

KW: Yeah, I’ve been watching.

TBB: What are your feelings on the new cast members?

KW: I haven’t gotten a chance to get to know Amber (Marchese) too well, I only filmed with her a little bit but Nicole (Napolitano) and Teresa (Aprea) I got to know and I like them, they’re a lot of fun. I honestly think it’s hard when you’re invested in a previous cast and their families. It’s hard being the new kid on the block, being the new kid at school, and I feel for them because I was the new kid at school too but I think they’re a lot of fun.

TBB: I have to ask, has your other famous cookbook writing cousin congratulated you yet?

KW: No, no comment.

***Stay tuned to TBB as we will be testing one of Kathy’s recipes!…Ok probably more than one!

Reality Roundup: Housewife Wedding Bells, and Baby Bump Swells

Last weekend two Housewives tied the knot. Real Housewives of Atlanta Kandi Burruss, married TV producer boyfriend  Todd Tucker on April 4th. Burruss’s storyline has revolved a lot around her mother Joyce‘s lukewarm feelings toward Tucker, but it seems like all went well for the big day. The 37 year old singer/songwriter was thrilled telling In Touch, “This is one of the best days of my life. I never imagined that I would marry my best friend. Todd’s been that to me.” Earlier this year Burruss and her mother appeared together on the Bethenny show to tell the world they have made peace regarding the relationship. Burruss has one daughter, Riley, 11, who she brings to the union.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Taylor Armstrong also married last weekend. Taylor whose former husband Russell committed suicide in 2011 after she filed for divorce, has an 8 year old daughter Kennedy. Taylor appeared on VH1’s Couples Therapy with new husband John Bluher. On the show Bluher had told Armstrong of his plans to adopt Kennedy to which she replied,“There could be no better father for (her)”. According to Radar Online, the lavish affair, which took place at the Pacific Palisades, CA Bel Air Bay Club cost the Bluher’s nada. The entire wedding and reception tab was picked up by WETV’s My Fair Wedding. Seems, even though she’s no longer a Housewife, Taylor just can’t keep off of Reality TV.

Last week, Joanna Krupa took to Instagram and Twitter to put to rest some long time rumors that have been swirling around.  “The rumors that I wanted to be transferred to RHOBH were always false,” she stated.  Joanna goes on to say that the rumors that RHOM has been axed or renewed are also false.  Too bad, because given Joanna’s history with RHOBH resident bitch Brandi Glanville, that would’ve been an intersting season.  As far as RHOM goes Bravo TV announced their returning shows last week and the Miami franchise was not on the list.  Considering Bravo beats to their own drum, this could mean anything. In our opinion, if they do bring it back, a cast shake-up is in order.

According to E! News, former RHOC star Lydia McLaughlin is pregnant with her third child.  Lydia announced on Friday that she’s due in November and couldn’t be happier.  She goes on to say that she was trying to have another baby and didn’t want that to be her storyline on the show.  Hence the reason she left.  Lydia says it was “bittersweet” to exit RHOC but she was ready to move on.

In RHONJ news, Lauren Manzo and fiancee Vito Scalia had a blowout engagement party at the Manzo family’s Brownstone catering hall.   According to Instagram and Twitter the only remaining cast members present at the  party were Melissa and Joe Gorga and Kathy and Rich Wakile.  If you remember the Manzo family left the show to focus on Manzo’d With Children.  Obviously former castmates the Laurita’s, Chris and Jacqueline being the bride to be’s uncle and aunt, were also there.

Manzo’d With Children  may have been the right move for Caroline and company. Last week Bravo announced their new lineup, and the RHONJ spinoff, along with two Atlanta spinoffs made the cut.  Kim Zolciak, husband Kroy and their six kids will be returning for another season of Don’t Be Tardy and  Kandi and new hubby Todd will appear in Kandi’s Wedding (working title).  The short term series will be similar to  NeNe Leakes’ spinoff I Dream Of NeNe and focus on the planning of their wedding.  Apparently the theme is Coming to Americawhich symbolizes the couple meeting in Africa. Bravo has also announced some scripted shows to their lineup including Odd Mom Out, which is a series produced by and starring novelist Jill Kargman as an Upper East Side mom who is trying to keep up with the proverbial Joneses.

Back to Atlanta, according to TMZ, Kenya Moore has threatened to have Porsha Williams fired after she attacked her at the taping of the reunion show.  The other Housewives are alledgedly on Porsha’s side, but no matter what happens, we cannot wait to see this reunion.  Hey Andy Cohen, at least no one attacked you this time.

TMZ also reports that  Real Housewives of Beverly Hills husband Ken Todd is being sued for allegedly attacking two construction workers outside of Sur, the couple’s West Hollywood restaurant.  Brothers Kevin and David Cazaref were using a concrete chipper when they accused Ken of complaining about their work and threatening and attacking them.  Apparently this is not the first lawsuit to come from the incident.  Ken sued the brothers in October 2013 saying he had been attacked and that the brothers tried to extort money from him.  The Cazaref bros are now suing for slander, and assault and battery.

Okay since I am guest Roundup blogging for Brent this week I cannot omit “The Killing Off of @TheBravoholic” from Twitter fiasco.  As a former Bravoholic I was saddened when Bravo decided to get rid of the handle.  In case you’re unfamiliar with it, @TheBravoholic was a contest in which @BravoTV chose a viewer (tweeter) to tweet as the Bravoholic for a week.  Long story short, Bravo chose someone to be the Bravoholic that final week, that people were up in arms over.  This woman, had made a very nasty comment to Carole Radziwill regarding her deceased husband while live tweeting RHONY the previous week.  Complaint tweets came flooding in along with lots of unfollowing and Twitter wars.  I tell you it was a show in itself.  Bravo blamed it on a security breach sending the former ‘holics an email telling us this-

“Due to questionable activity we’ve been experiencing with the account over the past few weeks we’ve decided to retire the Twitter handle and end the weekly contest.  We have evidence of multiple people accessing the account past their tenure as Bravoholic, and since we cannot pinpoint the source of this activity, we have no choice but to deactivate the account.”

Well, this set off another Twitter frenzy, with all mourning @TheBravoholic.  It spun off polls and fights and banding together as former Bravoholics with moments of tweet silence.  While I do feel bad the account is gone, and that TBB’s own Tara Cushing and Brent Osborne should’ve been chosen over some of theses clowns (collagegate, holicgate 13), the whole thing was super entertaining.  I wish that others could’ve had the chance but it is what it is. It was fun and I got to do it and that was pretty damn cool.  It’s over but there is a group of us who are now, the few, the proud, the Holics.

The Robinson Network Raises Money for Autism Speaks

On Friday October 11th The Robinson Network along with New Jersey Dining Out Magazine held an event at Son Cubano in West New York, NJ to raise money for Autism Speaks. Headed by  Heather Robinson and her husband former NBA  star Cliff, The Robinson Network aims to help children’s charities by linking them with athletes who use their clout to raise funds and awareness.  The Robinson’s co hosted the event with Dining Out’s publisher Robyn Levy.

The event was highlighted by special guest Austin Neil Orelli, an artist who has the condition. His collection known as The Art of Autism has made him well known. Austin’s paintings were auctioned off in a raffle that evening.

This was the second Robinson Network charity event we have attended. Last year we had the pleasure of going to a Toys for Tots event which was filmed for RHONJ but was edited out of the final cut. The Robinsons were fixtures on RHONJ season 4, most notably in a hot tub scene with the Wakiles and Gorgas. Heather, who most recently appeared on Lifetime’s Million Dollar Shoppers feels the scene was not representative of her as well as her recent turn on the new Lifetime series. MDS tried to make Robinson and her daughter appear overindulged and demanding, not characteristic of a family that runs a Not For Profit.

Having dined with Heather over the summer I can tell you that spoiled is far from the truth. Originally from the Midwest, Heather is down to earth and determined to teach her daughter and twin sons that hard work and humility are important. “My daughter thinks I’m tough on her for insisting she work,” she told me over the summer, “but she needs to know the value of money and that it doesn’t come easy.”

A Franklin Lakes resident, Heather spends a lot of time hanging with the Housewives, though the current cast was absent from her most recent event. “The cameras aren’t rolling and I think they are just laying low and regrouping for now,” she shared. One person who did make an appearance, however, was former RHONJ Danielle Staub, who, though we had only interacted on Twitter, recognized me when we were introduced. Staub lives in the riverfront neighborhood that is the home to Son Cubano. No nonsense, as she was on the show, she whipped me around to take the left side when we were photographed, which happens to be my good side too. Oh well, I had to relent, I wasn’t about to mess with a Jersey Housewife!
